About First Missionary Baptist Church
First Missionary Baptist Church is a historic Baptist congregation in Decatur and the city’s second-oldest African American church. The church was founded in 1866 in the home of Sis. Jane Young, with Rev. Alfred Peters serving as its first pastor. In 1910, the congregation purchased land at the corner of Vine and Grove Street, and its place in local history was recognized when it was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1990. Weekly worship continues with a Sunday morning service and a Wednesday evening call-in Bible study.
