First Church of Christ, Scientist in Alameda has served the community since its organization in 1898, with its elegant neoclassical church building completed in 1922 and designated a historic landmark by the City of Alameda in 1978. The church welcomes visitors to experience its one-hour Sunday morning service at 10 a.m., which features Bible lessons, hymns, organ music, and a vocal solo based on the weekly Christian Science Quarterly. Christian Science teaches that God is Love and that understanding our divine nature brings healing into our lives, as reflected in the church's Wednesday evening testimony meetings where members share experiences of spiritual insight and healing. The congregation also provides Sunday School for children and young people up to age 20, nursery care for infants and toddlers, and maintains a Reading Room at a separate location offering Christian Science literature and resources for study and prayer.
