About Berkeley Higashi Honganji
Berkeley Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple is a Shinshu Otani-ha (Higashi Honganji) Buddhist temple affiliated with Higashi Honganji in Kyoto, Japan. Established in 1926 by Japanese immigrants, the temple has long been part of Berkeley’s Japanese American Buddhist community. Its current temple building was constructed in the late 1930s, with classrooms and a social hall added in the 1960s. Sunday Family Service is offered at 10:00 AM, with services generally running until 11:30 AM. The temple offers children’s ministry and serves the community in English and Japanese.
