About Berkeley Higashi Honganji

Berkeley Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple is a Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land Buddhism) temple established in 1926 by Japanese immigrants and affiliated with the Higashi Honganji headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. For over nine decades, the temple has served as a gathering place for families and spiritual seekers exploring Buddhist teachings and practice. The temple welcomes people from all walks of life and offers both in-person and hybrid Sunday services featuring incense offering, chanting, gatha singing, and Dharma talks. The community also gathers for monthly memorial services, children's Dharma school classes, and special observances throughout the year including celebrations of the Buddha's birthday, equinoxes, and Obon. In addition to weekly services, the temple offers Shin Buddhism classes on Monday and Thursday evenings for those interested in deepening their understanding of the tradition.
