About Southwest California Synod
The Southwest California Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a regional church organization serving more than 100 congregations and worshipping communities across eight conferences in Southern California, including parts of Kern, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. Led by Bishop Brenda Bos, the first woman and first openly lesbian bishop in the ELCA, the synod embodies core values of faithfulness, loving neighbors, and joyfulness while walking alongside congregations in Christ's love. The synod is committed to being a Reconciling in Christ organization that welcomes, includes, and celebrates LGBTQIA+ people, and also serves as a Lutheran Restoring Creation Synod dedicated to environmental stewardship. Through pastoral care, mission planning, and fostering relationships among congregations and ecumenical partners, the synod supports congregations in their local ministries and strengthens interdependent relationships within the broader church community.
