About First Lutheran Church
First Lutheran Church in New Britain is a liturgical Lutheran congregation with deep roots in the city’s Swedish immigrant community. Swedish settlers in the area formed the church in the 1870s, and 28 founding members dedicated its first church home in 1885. The present Franklin Square structure was dedicated in 1906 and retains original Gothic-style features, including stained glass windows and a pipe organ. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated funds that helped pay for the windows and organ. Alongside Sunday worship, the church offers children’s ministry, small groups, and a Wednesday evening pasta dinner served after a brief worship service.
