About ST BENEDICT THE MOOR CATHOLIC CHURCH SAVANNAH
St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church is a historic Catholic parish in Savannah with deep roots in the African American Catholic community. In 1874, Benedictine priests Rev. Bergier and Rev. Wissel arrived to serve Savannah’s African American population, and the parish was established later that year with a small frame church. A new church was built in 1889, and the current church was constructed in 1949 on the same site. The parish became known as the “Mother Church” for Black Catholics. In 2008, the Georgia Historical Society recognized it with a historical marker as the oldest African American Catholic church in Georgia. Reverend Romanus O. Ezeugwu has served as pastor since 2012.
