About Saint Joseph Sisters
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation with deep roots in American religious history, tracing their origins to 17th-century France and establishing themselves in Philadelphia in 1847. Based in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, the congregation comprises approximately 500 Catholic sisters who live and work across twelve states, dedicated to their founding charism of unioning love and addressing urgent social challenges. The sisters have ministered in hospitals, schools, orphanages, battlefields, and community service organizations, responding to the needs of the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable with generosity and spiritual dedication. Rooted in the vision of incarnating Christ's love through both spiritual and corporal works of mercy, the Sisters of Saint Joseph invite visitors and partners in mission to join their efforts to unite God, neighbor, and all creation through prayer and compassionate service.
