About First United Methodist Church
First United Methodist Church of Honolulu is Hawaii's original Methodist congregation, established in 1855 under a Royal Charter issued by King Kamehameha IV, making it the only congregation in United Methodism so distinguished. Located on Beretania and Victoria Streets near the Honolulu Museum of Art, the church features a sanctuary designed by architect Alfred Preis, who also designed the Arizona Memorial. The congregation welcomes visitors to experience blended worship services that honor both traditional and contemporary elements, including the symbolic Polynesian shell-blowing that opens each service, hymns, gospel-influenced praise music, and occasional presentations of hula and sign dance.
