About Nuuanu Congregational Church

Nu'uanu Congregational Church is a diverse, open congregation rooted in 140 years of Christian ministry among Japanese immigrants in Honolulu, beginning with the arrival of 950 Japanese contract workers in 1885. The church has evolved from its origins as a Japanese-speaking community into a welcoming congregation that affirms all persons as children of God while responding to community needs. Located on Pali Highway with extensive facilities including a sanctuary, fellowship spaces, and the Kibo Kan building, the church maintains active worship services and serves as a host site for Family Promise Hawaii, providing shelter and support for homeless families. The congregation continues its legacy of discipleship and community outreach while respecting diverse views and utilizing members' talents and resources for ministry.
