About Kailua Hongwanji Temple
Windward Buddhist Temple, formerly known as Kailua Hongwanji Mission, is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple established in 1968 in Kailua, Hawaii. The temple serves the Windward Oahu community with weekly Dharma services held every Sunday at 9 am, offering teachings rooted in Buddha's wisdom and compassion. The temple underwent a significant renovation, with its original structure demolished and rebuilt, with the new temple dedicated in February 2014. Beyond regular services, the temple hosts family-focused activities on the first Sunday of each month, special seasonal observances, and community events such as the annual Bon Dance, which celebrates the obon season when families honor their ancestors together. The temple provides a welcoming environment for spiritual development through classes, services, and community programs that emphasize the Buddhist sangha, or community of practitioners.
