About Shelter Care Ministries
Shelter Care Ministries began in 1982 as an outreach of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, starting with a Saturday soup kitchen before expanding to provide shelter for homeless families and support services for adults living with mental illness. Today, the organization operates multiple programs including supportive housing with 48 houses and apartments for families plus 15 additional apartments for individuals, and the Jubilee Center, a drop-in day program serving over 450 active members. The ministry's core focus is supporting individuals experiencing chronic mental illness and working to end homelessness in Winnebago and Boone counties. Guided by the belief that every person has value and is more than their circumstances, Shelter Care assists individuals and families in creating plans that address mental and physical health, increase income and education, and secure stable housing. The organization welcomes volunteers and donors who share its commitment to providing shelter, awakening hope, and honoring dignity.
