About Bethel AME Church
Bethel A.M.E. Church, located at 201 West Charlestown Avenue in Jeffersonville, Indiana, is the oldest African American church in Clark County, having been organized in 1842. The congregation has a rich history of community engagement and social justice work, including operating the Augustus F. Hawkins Literacy Center for after-school academic support and sponsoring the USDA Summer Feeding Program that serves thousands of meals annually. Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Tonya Burris-Mallory, the church continues its Methodist tradition of the social gospel while housing Maple Leaf Academy, an early childhood development center emphasizing STEAM education. Visitors are welcomed to join Sunday services that include Sunday School at 9:30 a.m., breakfast at 10:30 a.m., and worship at 11:00 a.m., as well as Wednesday evening prayer and Bible study sessions held via Zoom.
