About St Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church
St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church in Merrillville, Indiana welcomes visitors to experience the Divine Liturgy in English, with some Church Slavonic hymns woven throughout the ancient tradition. The parish serves the northwest Indiana Catholic community with a strong emphasis on standing worship, unaccompanied congregational singing, and communion distributed from a spoon with leavened bread. Pastor Fr. Michal Bučko leads a welcoming congregation that includes many former Roman Catholics who understand the experience of encountering Byzantine worship for the first time. The church also hosts the Catholic Schoolhouse, a homeschool co-op serving preschool through high school students, and maintains an active community through social events and regular Fish Fry and Pirohi sales. Visitors are encouraged to arrive without fear of feeling out of place, as the parish actively invites newcomers to join in the spiritual journey toward communion with God.
