About Sacred Heart Church, Holy Spirit Parish
Sacred Heart Church is part of Holy Spirit Parish, a unified Catholic faith community in Dubuque, Iowa, comprising three distinct parishes—Sacred Heart, Holy Ghost, and Holy Trinity—that trace their roots to German immigration and Catholic settlement in the 1840s. The parish has a rich 150-year history of serving the North End and Eagle Point neighborhoods, building schools, convents, and community centers while witnessing countless baptisms, confirmations, marriages, and vocations to religious life. In response to declining Catholic population and priest shortages, the three parishes formalized their collaboration in 2007 and officially merged into Holy Spirit Parish in 2011, allowing them to pool resources while maintaining their distinctive identities and buildings. Today, under pastoral leadership and a dedicated staff, the parish remains rooted in its foundational commitment to faith in Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit as it serves the wider Dubuque community.
