First United Methodist Church in Fairfield is rooted in a long Methodist presence in the community. Fairfield’s first Methodist meetings were led by circuit rider Jesse Herbert in 1840, and the first church building was built in 1848 at the southeast corner of B and Washington streets. The congregation’s current building on North Court Street was dedicated on April 13, 1924. Today the church describes itself as rooted in Christ, growing in grace, and serving in love. It is proud of its United Methodist affiliation and heritage, and it identifies as an Oasis Congregation for people whose churches have disaffiliated.
