About Brothers of Christian Instruction
The Brothers of Christian Instruction is a Catholic religious community headquartered at the Notre Dame Chapel in Alfred, Maine. Founded in France in 1819 by Father Jean-Marie de la Mennais and Father Gabriel Deshayes, the congregation has grown to serve in 25 countries across six continents. Though the Brothers no longer teach in traditional classrooms, their lifelong vocation as educators continues through spiritual presence, instruction, and community service dedicated to making Jesus Christ better known and loved. At their spiritual center in Alfred, the Brothers maintain a robust prayer life anchored in daily Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, Eucharistic Adoration, and devotion to the Virgin Mary through the Rosary. Their ongoing ministry extends throughout Southern Maine with particular focus on supporting the poor and vulnerable.
