About Good Shepherd Food Bank
Good Shepherd Food Bank is a nonprofit organization established in 1981 to combat hunger throughout Maine. Founded by JoAnn Pike and committed volunteers, the organization has grown from a small grassroots effort in the Lewiston area to become Maine's largest hunger-relief organization, now serving all 16 counties with 600 partner locations including food pantries, meal programs, and mobile distributions. The food bank promotes food security by improving access to nutritious and culturally relevant food, building strong community partnerships, and mobilizing the public to address the root causes of hunger. With a focus on equity, partnership, and inclusion, Good Shepherd operates multiple programs including Cooking Matters Maine, Mainers Feeding Mainers, school and healthcare partnerships, and advocacy initiatives. The organization distributed over 40 million meals in 2024 and sources 3.6 million pounds of food locally each year.
