About Dharma Realm Buddhist Assn
The Dharma Realm Buddhist Association's Bethesda-area monastery, Avatamsaka Vihara, was established in 1990 by Venerable Master Hsuan Hua and relocated to its current location in 2003. Founded on principles of the Proper Dharma, the association works to translate Buddhist scriptures and promote moral education while providing a tranquil place of practice. The vihara holds regular weekly Sunday Dharma assemblies featuring the Shurangama Mantra, repentance ceremonies, Buddha recitation, and Sutra chanting, with larger gatherings on special occasions honoring the birthdays and enlightenment days of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The community also organizes extended retreats during Thanksgiving and long weekends, as well as a Chinese school teaching traditional ethics, meditation, and Buddhist teachings to children.
