New Mt. Olivet Apostolic Church in Capitol Heights has roots in the Holy Mount Olivet Apostolic Church of Christ, founded in 1957 by Elder Walter Izler. The church was renamed New Mt. Olivet Apostolic Church in 1993 when its new edifice in Seat Pleasant was dedicated. Bishop Hopeton W. Mair, Sr. serves as bishop and pastor, with Bishop Van Bynum, Sr. as assistant pastor. Its mission centers on preaching and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism in Jesus’ name, and the infilling of the Holy Ghost. The church’s history notes growth that includes two churches in the United States and five churches in Jamaica, West Indies.
