About Sugarloaf Congregation
Sugarloaf Congregation of Unitarian Universalists in Germantown, Maryland is a welcoming spiritual community that celebrates theological and cultural diversity. Located on five beautiful acres bordering Seneca Creek State Park, the congregation meets in a charming yurt and frame house to explore meaningful questions about life, spirituality, and how to inspire good in the world. SCUU embraces people of all beliefs—including Christianity, Judaism, atheism, Buddhism, humanism, and earth-centered traditions—united by shared values expressed through the Seven Principles. The congregation offers hybrid services combining in-person and Zoom participation, religious exploration for children, small group connections, musical offerings, and opportunities for community service and fellowship. Dress Code: Attire is mostly casual, but some like to dress up—wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Service Format: Services last one hour with a minister speaking from a podium, congregational singing of hymns, and significant variety and participation from the congregation, followed by a coffee hour. Visitor Tips: Children ages 3–15 have religious education offerings, and children of all ages are welcome in services; arrive early to meet people in the yurt before or after services.
