Magen David Sephardic Congregation in Rockville, Maryland is a welcoming Sephardic Jewish community rooted in a rich heritage spanning multiple Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions. Founded as a formal congregation in 1966, building on the earlier Yom Tov prayer group established in 1914, MDSC reflects the arrival and settlement of Sephardic Jews from Turkey, Greece, Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya in the Washington DC area. The congregation moved into its current elegant Moorish-style sanctuary in 1998, which was designed to celebrate Sephardic roots and architectural beauty. MDSC is defined by inclusiveness, warmth, and a commitment to preserving Sephardic customs and melodies while welcoming members from diverse backgrounds. The community offers daily minyanim, children's services, educational classes in Hebrew and Jewish traditions, and active social organizations including a Sisterhood and Men's Club.
