About Carmelite Monastery

The Carmelite Monastery in Roxbury is a contemplative Catholic community belonging to the worldwide Order of Discalced Carmelites, following the spiritual tradition of Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross. Since their foundation in 1890, the Carmelite nuns have maintained a prayerful presence in the inner city of Boston, with their bells continuing to ring daily as a call to prayer and a reminder of God's faithful presence. The community is part of a global network of 60 monasteries of Carmelite nuns throughout the United States and 88 countries worldwide. Visitors are invited to participate in Eucharistic Adoration, novenas, seasonal prayers, and lecture series featuring the wisdom of Carmelite Doctors of the Church and Saints. The monastery also welcomes those interested in learning more about the contemplative life through their programs and can offer prayers for personal intentions and needs.
