About Sisters of Saint Joseph

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation of more than 500 sisters with roots tracing back to seventeenth-century France, where they were founded on the principle of uniting neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God. The congregation arrived in Philadelphia in 1847 and established themselves in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, where their motherhouse remains today. Throughout their history, the sisters have ministered in hospitals, schools, orphanages, and community aid services, responding generously to the urgent needs of their time. Their charism emphasizes spiritual and corporal works of mercy, with particular attention to the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Today, the sisters continue their mission through various ministries across twelve states, supported by approximately 600 associates and lay partners who share their commitment to creating union between all people and God.
