About United Church of Christ
Douglas Congregational United Church of Christ, built in 1882, is a progressive and radically-inclusive spiritual community located in Douglas, Michigan. Known as the church of the Extravagant Welcome, it was among the first churches in the United States to declare itself Open & Affirming, fully including LGBTQ people in all aspects of church life and ministry. The congregation actively engages in social and creation justice work and welcomes people from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and spiritual viewpoints. Sunday worship features inclusive language and God imagery, with open communion offered each week. The church also maintains a beautiful meditation and memorial garden on its grounds and offers a renovated 19th-century retreat house for contemplative stays. Visitors of all faith backgrounds and life circumstances are warmly welcomed.
