About Detroit Zen Center
Detroit Zen Center is a Buddhist meditation community in Hamtramck founded in 1990 by Zen monk Hwalson Sunim. The center is described as a spiritual branch of Sudeok-sa Temple in Korea and follows a “Blue Collar Zen” approach that integrates Detroit and Korean Zen culture. Its mission includes meditation, retreat, manual work, art, mentorship, fellowship, and environmental stewardship. Since 1990, monks, members, and volunteers have renovated an abandoned historic site as part of the center’s life and practice. The center also offers residency and retreat opportunities for short- and long-term guests by application.
