About Portage Lake United Church
Portage Lake United Church is a welcoming, open and affirming congregation located in Houghton, Michigan, across from Michigan Tech. The church resulted from the merger of two historic local congregations and maintains affiliations with both the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the United Church of Christ. Since opening its doors in 1976, PLUC has brought together students, faculty, staff, and families from the surrounding community in worship that expresses God's welcome for all. Under the pastoral leadership of Peter Norland since 2018, the congregation celebrates diversity and is rooted in the Trinity while actively branching out to serve community needs. Members delight in music and support local musicians, including the Pine Mountain Music Festival. Visitors will find a caring, supportive community of varied denominational backgrounds and cultural perspectives united in their love of Christ.
