About Saint Joseph Sisters
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation with deep historical roots tracing back to seventeenth-century France. Founded in 1650 in Le Puy, France, the community arrived in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1836 and expanded to Philadelphia in 1847, where they began their ministry at Saint John's Orphanage for Boys. Today, approximately 500 sisters in the congregation continue their founding mission of uniting neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God through diverse ministries including education, healthcare, and service to the poor and marginalized across twelve states. The sisters are known for their commitment to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and their dedication to addressing urgent social challenges. Their motherhouse is located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, and they welcome Associates in Mission—lay partners who share their commitment to their common mission.
