About Clair Memorial United Methodist Church
Clair Memorial United Methodist Church is a historic congregation located in Jersey City, New Jersey, with deep roots in the African American Methodist tradition dating back to the nineteenth century. The church is the result of a 1945 merger between Thirkield Methodist Episcopal Church and St. Mark Zion Methodist Church, and was formally named in honor of Rev. Mathew W. Claire. After a devastating fire in 2001, the congregation demonstrated remarkable resilience, worshiping at a neighboring synagogue for ten years before returning to their restored home in 2011. Under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Hugo E. Rey, the church continues to serve as a stable community institution, offering worship services, Bible study, and outreach ministries grounded in Methodist values of compassion, openness, personal integrity, and social justice. All are warmly welcomed to join this spirit-led congregation in their mission to share faith and transform their community.
