About Bethel Church of Morristown
Bethel Church of Morristown has deep roots in Morristown’s African American church history. The congregation began in 1841 as the Bethel Mite Society and was incorporated in 1843 as Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Morristown, with Bishop Willis Nazery as its first pastor. For its first eight years, members met in homes before building their first church on Spring Street in 1849. Bethel also served as the only school for Colored and Native American children in Morris County. The present church was completed and dedicated on November 8, 1970.
