Franciscan Charities, founded in 2004 by Brother Paul Miller, is a service-centered ministry dedicated to addressing the critical needs of Newark's poorest residents in the Central Ward. Operating from a restored church space, the organization provides hot meals, clothing, food pantry items, and support for families experiencing homelessness, poverty, and hardship. Since its humble beginning serving twelve people in a church basement, Franciscan Charities has grown to serve over one million meals and work with hundreds of volunteers annually. The ministry reflects a Franciscan commitment to human dignity, offering not only material assistance but also a welcoming, safe space and compassionate guidance.
