About St John's Roman Catholic Church
St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Newark serves its community not only through its Sunday Mass and sacramental life, but also through extensive outreach ministries rooted in Catholic social teaching. For over forty years, the parish has operated St. John's Soup Kitchen, dedicated to feeding the hungry and serving those experiencing homelessness, poverty, mental health challenges, and addiction in Newark. Under the leadership of Msgr. John P. Hourihan from 1972 to 2008, the parish expanded its mission to include a health clinic and women's center, alongside its soup kitchen operations. The church continues this legacy of serving with dignity those most vulnerable in the community, operating as part of the broader Body of Christ committed to sharing God's compassion with all people.
