About St. Mary's Church Newark Abbey
St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, located in Newark's Central Ward, welcomes all to experience God's love and grace through worship and spiritual community. With roots reaching back to 1842 when it was founded to serve German-speaking immigrants, the parish has demonstrated remarkable resilience, rebuilding after destruction during the 1856 Know-Nothing attack and continuing under Benedictine guidance since 1857. Today, St. Mary's thrives as a vibrant family embracing African American, West African, and Caribbean communities united in worship and service. The parish actively embodies its faith through religious education, sacramental preparation, cultural celebrations, and meaningful outreach including the Pierre Toussaint Food Pantry and immigration assistance services. Under the spiritual leadership of Father Patrick Winbush, the church remains a beacon of hope dedicated to Gospel living and serving Newark's residents with compassion and dignity.
