Built in 1891, the church stands as a testament to the A.M.E. Zion denomination's central role in the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad, with many congregants serving as activists for freedom. Harriet Tubman herself contributed $500 toward the construction and placed a coin bearing the profile of John Brown in the church's cornerstone during the laying ceremony in 1891. The congregation, which traces its roots to 1838 when African Methodist Episcopal members first met in private homes, formally reincorporated in 1846 and eventually established this landmark sanctuary. Now designated a National Historic Landmark and part of the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park under the National Park Service, the building is undergoing restoration to its 1913 appearance and represents an important center of African American religious and civil rights history.
