About Chapin Mills Retreat Center Buddhist

Chapin Mill Retreat Center is a Buddhist meditation facility situated on 135 acres near Batavia, New York, operated by the Rochester Zen Center, one of the oldest and largest Zen Buddhist organizations in North America. Founded in 1966 by Roshi Philip Kapleau, the Center has spent nearly six decades establishing itself as a respected hub for Zen practice and teacher training. The retreat center features a purpose-built zendo (meditation hall) with expansive windows overlooking the countryside, residential accommodations for over 50 people, and flexible spaces for workshops and practice. The facility hosts sesshin (intensive retreats), daily meditation sessions, residential training programs, and introductory workshops, while also welcoming rental by other spiritual groups seeking a contemplative setting. Under the current guidance of Co-Directors Sensei John Pulleyn and Sensei Dhara Kowal, the Center continues to help integrate Zen Buddhism into American practice while serving affiliated groups across the United States, Europe, Mexico, and New Zealand.
