About Sisters of Saint Joseph

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation with deep roots in American religious history, tracing their origins to seventeenth-century France and establishing their presence in Philadelphia in 1847. Based at their Motherhouse in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, the approximately 500 sisters and their associates in mission dedicate themselves to the charism of unioning love—bringing together neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God. The congregation has ministered in hospitals, schools, orphanages, battlefields, and community aid services, responding generously to emerging needs and working especially with the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Their commitment to nonviolence as gospel witness and their focus on spiritual and corporal works of mercy continue to guide their work across twelve states in America today.
