About Sisters Of Saint Joseph
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation with deep roots in service and community care, tracing its spiritual heritage back to seventeenth-century France. Founded on the principle of uniting neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God, the congregation has ministered across the United States since arriving in Philadelphia in 1847, initially serving orphan boys and subsequently responding to evolving community needs through education, healthcare, social services, and advocacy for the vulnerable and marginalized. Today, approximately 500 members continue this legacy of spiritual and corporal works of mercy, guided by their founding charism of unioning love and commitment to addressing urgent social challenges. The Sisters also welcome Associates in Mission—lay partners and coworkers who share their commitment to this unifying mission while maintaining their own lifestyles. Their Motherhouse is located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, and the congregation maintains an active presence across twelve states throughout America.
