About Sisters Of St Joseph
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation of more than 500 sisters with deep historical roots tracing back to seventeenth-century France. Founded on the charism of unioning love and the commitment to unite neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God, the congregation arrived in Philadelphia in 1847 and has ministered extensively in hospitals, schools, orphanages, and community services throughout the region and across twelve states. The sisters are known for their responsive spirit to urgent needs, exemplified historically by their service as Civil War nurses and their ongoing dedication to addressing the needs of the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Their spirituality emphasizes both spiritual and corporal works of mercy, renewed through Vatican Council II's call to return to foundational inspiration. Visitors are welcome to encounter a community committed to the incarnation of Gospel values through active service and contemplative faith.
