About Ch'an Meditation Center

Chan Meditation Center, located in Elmhurst, Queens, New York, was founded in 1977 by the late Chan Master Sheng Yen to bring Chinese Chan (Zen) Buddhism to the Western world. The center serves as a place of serenity and self-cultivation where visitors can learn and practice Buddha's teachings through the Dharma Drum lineage of Chan Buddhism. CMC welcomes all interested in meditation and Buddhist study regardless of background, age, religion, or ethnic origin. The center offers meditation classes and retreats, Dharma talks and classes, Tai-Chi moving meditation, chanting services, and sutra study sessions. As both an educational and community center and a small monastery where ordained monks and nuns reside, CMC maintains a commitment to promoting the purification of human life while preserving traditional Chinese culture and publishing teachings through Chan Magazine and Dharma Drum Publications.
