About Sisters of Saint Joseph

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation with deep historical roots tracing back to 17th-century France and established in Philadelphia in 1847. Originally founded to address the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, the sisters have ministered in hospitals, battlefields, schools, orphanages, and community aid services throughout their nearly 200-year presence in America. Today, approximately 500 sisters and 600 associates in mission continue their founding charism of uniting God, neighbor, and all creation, responding to the urgent challenges facing the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. The congregation maintains its motherhouse in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia and operates throughout twelve states, embodying a legacy of generosity and readiness to serve wherever need is greatest.
