About Sisters Of Saint Joseph

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a congregation of more than 500 Catholic sisters with deep historical roots tracing back to seventeenth-century France. Founded on the charism of unioning love and a commitment to spiritual and corporal works of mercy, the congregation has served in hospitals, schools, orphanages, and community aid services since arriving in Philadelphia in 1847. Based at their Motherhouse in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, the sisters continue their mission of uniting God, neighbor, and all creation while addressing urgent challenges facing the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Their legacy spans nearly two centuries of dedicated service to the Church and broader society, and they welcome Associates in Mission—lay partners who share their commitment to this spiritual vision.
