About Shinnecock Nation
The Shinnecock Indian Nation is one of the oldest self-governing tribes in New York State and was formally recognized by the United States federal government as the 565th federally recognized tribe on October 1, 2010. Historically, the Shinnecock people have owned and occupied their aboriginal homelands in and around Southampton on the eastern end of Long Island from time immemorial, with their name roughly translating in their eastern Algonquian dialect to 'people of the stony shore.' The Nation primarily holds jurisdiction over tribal territory at Shinnecock Neck, a peninsula encompassing approximately 900 acres that juts into Shinnecock Bay, as well as land at Westwoods in Hampton Bays. With over 1,589 enrolled tribal members, about half of the Shinnecock membership resides on the Reservation at Shinnecock Neck. The community hosts significant cultural events throughout the year, including the 80th Annual Shinnecock Indian Powwow and other gatherings that celebrate their heritage and traditions.
