About First Presbyterian Cemetery

First Presbyterian Cemetery of Southold is among New York State's most important burial grounds, founded in 1640 as the state's oldest surviving colonial cemetery. Originally a one-acre plot set aside by Puritans who settled Southold, the cemetery has expanded to eight acres across four distinct sections: the Memorial Garden for cremated remains, the Memorial Section with flat inscribed stones, the Monument Section featuring an impressive collection of headstones and monuments, and The Old Burying Ground in the cemetery's northwest corner. The cemetery welcomes visitors during daylight hours and offers burial plots and columbarium niches for sale to all, with a virtual database allowing people to locate graves online. The grounds reflect significant historical, artistic, and religious importance through their gravestones and landscaping.
