About Sisters of Saint Joseph
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic religious congregation with deep roots in American faith and service. Founded in France in 1650 and established in Philadelphia in 1847, the community has grown to approximately 500 sisters who live and work across twelve states. Known for their charism of uniting people with God and one another, the Sisters have ministered in hospitals, schools, orphanages, and community aid services. Their legacy includes service as Civil War nurses, educators for immigrant communities, and advocates for social justice and nonviolence. Today, the Sisters continue their mission of spiritual and corporal works of mercy, responding to the needs of the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. The congregation welcomes Associates in Mission—approximately 600 lay partners who share their commitment to union with God and neighbor through their daily lives.
