St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Asheville is the oldest African American congregation in the city, with roots tracing back to 1867 when it was established as Freedmen's Church to serve as both a place of worship and an educational institution for Black children and adults. The current brick structure, built in 1894 and consecrated in 1898, is renowned for its sophisticated interior woodwork, beautiful stained glass windows, and a Midmer pipe organ, earning recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, St. Matthias is an intentionally diverse and welcoming congregation that values its African American heritage while embracing people of many different nationalities, backgrounds, and orientations. The church is actively engaged in community ministry through partnerships like Room in the Inn, which provides shelter and hospitality to women experiencing homelessness in Asheville.
