About Holy Cross Orthodox Church
Holy Cross Orthodox Church is an English-language mission of the Orthodox Church in America founded in 2006 to serve the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. Located in Kernersville since early 2024 in a newly completed church building, the parish welcomes visitors from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds to experience ancient Orthodox worship. The church emphasizes that it is a warm, open community of ordinary people seeking to preserve and transmit the faith through liturgical services conducted entirely in English. With nearly 200 parishioners on a typical Sunday, Holy Cross offers inquirers' classes, a church school, and a youth group alongside its regular sacramental life. The parish grew from a small mission meeting in temporary spaces to a flourishing community that has baptized and chrismated dozens of new members in recent years.
First-Time Visitor Info for Holy Cross Orthodox Church
Dress Code: Comfortable clothing of any style is welcome; parishioners wear a wide variety of dress from formal to casual. Service Format: The Divine Liturgy begins at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays, preceded by a brief service at 9:40 a.m. Services are sung entirely a cappella in English with no instrumental music. Expect people to move about during the early part of the service to venerate icons, light candles, and cross themselves; worship engages the whole person through standing, bowing, and making the sign of the cross. Visitor Tips: Arrive early to light candles if desired; feel free to sit if standing is difficult; there is no point in the service when everyone waits quietly before an entrance hymn begins. You will not be singled out, and visitors are encouraged to follow the service text at their own pace and ask questions. Visitors typically do not receive Holy Communion unless they are baptized Orthodox Christians in good standing, but all are welcome to stay for coffee hour afterward to meet the community.
