About Zen Center of North Carolina

The North Carolina Zen Center is a Zen Buddhist community and retreat center located on 15 acres of wooded land south of Chapel Hill near Pittsboro. Founded in the early 1970s by students of Joshu Sasaki Roshi, the center is dedicated to the study and practice of Zen meditation and the cultivation of awakened mind and heart. The center welcomes both seasoned practitioners and beginners interested in exploring meditation practice through weekly sessions, traditional services, instruction, and residential retreats. Nestled in a grove of tall pines and hardwoods overlooking a stream, the center provides a peaceful atmosphere for practice and includes a meditation hall, kitchen facilities, dormitory rooms, and walking meditation areas. The North Carolina Zen Center serves the local community as well as practitioners across the country and also makes its facilities available to outside groups for retreats.
