About Lakewood Congregational Church
Lakewood Congregational Church has been a cornerstone of community faith since its founding in 1905, when congregational families first gathered in private homes before establishing a permanent building in 1913 at the northeast corner of West Clifton and Detroit. As an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ, this historic church welcomes people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, racial and economic backgrounds, and abilities into the full life and ministry of the community. Sunday worship is held at 10 a.m. with both in-person and livestream options, accompanied by the beautiful Schantz Organ installed in 1966. Beyond worship, the church offers extensive ministries including Bible studies, book discussion groups like Adventures in Reading, a Prayer Shawl Ministry, Pub Theology for adults, and organized fellowship groups for men, women, and those in various life stages. The congregation operates Haynes Preschool as a vital community outreach and maintains a rich tradition of hospitality and spiritual formation that has sustained it through nearly 120 years of change.
