About First Congregational Church
First Congregational Church in Mansfield has served the community since 1833, when founder Matthias Day established the congregation after leaving the Presbyterian Church over its stance on slavery. The church has rebuilt twice after devastating fires, most recently in 1951, and now occupies a 30,000-square-foot facility in a residential neighborhood on the city's south side. The congregation emphasizes intellectual and spiritual freedom, encouraging members to develop their own relationships with God through thoughtful worship, meaningful sermons, and community fellowship. Services blend traditional Christian elements with contemporary spirituality, and the church actively welcomes visitors of all ages and backgrounds to experience its warm, inclusive atmosphere. In addition to its main campus, the church stewards Hemlock Trails, a 56-acre wooded retreat along the Clearfork River that serves as a gathering place for spiritual renewal and community events.
