About Vernon Ame Church
Historic Vernon African Methodist Episcopal Church in Tulsa was founded in 1905 and has a deep connection to the Historic Black Wall Street era. The basement of the current edifice was built in 1919 and remained standing after the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 destroyed the superstructure, parsonage, and sanctuary. The congregation completed the current sanctuary in 1925, and Vernon AME is described as the only intact, standing Black-owned structure remaining from that era. Alongside Sunday worship and Sunday School, the church serves the community through the God Provides Feeding Ministry, offering warm meals every day to anyone who comes to the church doors.
