About Vernon Chapel A M E Church
Vernon Chapel A M E Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Tulsa. Founded in 1905, the church’s current basement was built in 1919 and survived the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, when the superstructure, parsonage, and sanctuary under construction were destroyed. The sanctuary was completed in 1925, and Vernon AME is described as the only intact, standing Black-owned structure remaining from the Historic Black Wall Street era. The church continues a strong community presence through the God Provides Feeding Ministry, which has served more than 600,000 home-cooked meals since March 2020 and provides warm meals every day to those who come to the church.
